Hard Times

We have become a people of high drama. For the more exuberant, each story, meal, or vacation is the best ever. For the struggling, each personal setback or trial is unimaginably horrible, the worst that has ever happened, to them or to anyone else. Our inborn selfishness, which needs little encouragement to run amok, is further flattered and facilitated by the access to instant communication that encourages us to place our lives on constant public display.
